KCS presents evening of carols

Posted Nov 27, 2009 By EMC News

EMC Events - The Kanata Choral Society will hold its annual Christmas concert on Saturday, Nov. 28.

The concert includes a performance of Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols."

Britten composed this piece while on voyage from the States to England in 1942. Originally, this work was for three-part treble voices and harp. This work was very popular and publisher Boosey and Hawkes invited composer Julius Harrison to arrange a SATB version.

"A Ceremony of Carols" consists of a collection of medieval and sixteenth century poems with plainsong at the beginning and closing.

The harpist for this work is Deanne van Rooyen, who attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she was a student of Marilyn Costello and Judy Loman. She received her M.Music from Roosevelt University in Chicago. She has performed throughout North America, Europe and her native South Africa as a soloist and chamber musician.

Soprano soloists are Tzeitel Abrego and Émilie De Baets.

Abrego is a grade 12 student at All Saints High School. Émilie De Baets is a third year student in Vocal Performance at the University of Ottawa.

The evening will also include Christmas music by other composers like John Rutter, Jay Althouse, Tchaikovsky and others.

The Arpa Nova Ensemble, under the direction of Hoda Nassim, will perform popular carols set for five harps, bodhran (Celtic drum) and keyboard.

And of course the audience will get a chance to test their vocal chords with the annual sing-along.

This concert will take place on Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul's Anglican Church, 20 Young Rd.
