Ward council meeting goes Jan. 18

Posted Jan 15, 2010 By Marianne Wilkinson

EMC News - The first ward council meeting of 2010 will be on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in the program room at the Kanata Seniors Centre, which is located at the west end of the Mlacak Centre.

Key issues on the agenda that evening are the 2010 budget, increasing crime and the need for a symposium on public safety, public consultation on the downtown tunnel, winter operations, economic development, IT briefing for businesses, zoning re: drive-through restaurants and OC Transpo concerns.

There also will be updates on construction activities and on the future Kanata North Recreation Complex. You are welcome to come and to raise any question or issue on a municipal issue.

WE LOST THE CHALLENGE

During the launch of the Fall Cleaning the Capital Campaign, I issued a challenge to other councillors to see if they could involve the greatest proportion of volunteers in their ward in the campaign. The challenge worked! After winning the title for four consecutive campaigns, Kanata North was out 'cleaned' by the Stittsville-Kanata West residents. Suggestions on a suitable award for them are welcomed.

Despite this setback, Kanata North still had a great response to the campaign. We cleaned up in the competition for highest ward participation in the spring with 14.3 per cent of residents completing a clean up project, while Stittsville-Kanata West had the highest participation levels for the fall campaign with 7.5 per cent of residents taking part. The average ward participation across the city for spring 2009 was 7.3 per cent and 2.7 per cent for fall.

The recognition plaque for the highest spring participation was presented at the launch of the fall campaign on Sept. 14 at the Old Town Hall in Kanata, where the challenge was issued. Awards for the fall campaign will be presented at a ceremony at City Hall on Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. where we will honour the sponsors, volunteers and community activists who helped make the 2009 campaigns the most successful to-date.

HELMSDALE DEVELOPMENT

Come to the Briarbrook-Morgan's Grant Community Association meeting on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Chartwell Kanata Retirement Residence (20 Shirley's Brook) to see the site plan for the townhouse development planned at the corner of Helmsdale and Shirley's Brook. Representatives from the developer, Holizner, will be present to answer your questions and receive your recommendations.

CRIME AND SAFETY

I've just received the crime report for Kanata North for the month of December. This is a new report derived from the crime-mapping tool on the Ottawa Police website. In December, it lists seven calls for emergency assistance, eight mischief to property, 13 suspicious situations, 13 traffic complaints, 23 thefts, five assaults, 58 motor vehicle accidents (three with injuries and 10 fail to remain), 21 disputes/disturbances and 20 others (includes threats, lost and found property).

I'm concerned about the number of incidents and will ask Const. Strotmann to comment on them at Ward Council. I also will be holding a safety workshop later this winter to hear from police, paramedics, fire, and emergency services and discuss ways to make our communities safer.
