EMC Events - This Saturday (Feb. 6) promises to be plenty of fun for Kanata residents and visitors with two winter carnivals taking place. The Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club has daytime and nighttime events planned to liven up the winter and Trinity Presbyterian Church is offering an afternoon of fun for a good cause.

TRINITY WINTER CARNIVAL

The Trinity Winter Carnival is taking place at 110 McCurdy Dr. from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and is donating 50 per cent of the proceeds to Haiti Earthquake Relief. Organizers are also asking for a non-perishable food donation to "fill the igloo." Donations will go to the Kanata Food Cupboard.

"This will be our fourth annual fundraising fun day," said one of the organizers Adam Janes. "We did the first three of them in the fall, The Trinity Fall Fair. Each one was a great success and we raised around $4,000 over that time. We started it as a fundraiser for our youth programs but also as a youth project to give back to the community, we have always supported other charities."

Janes noted that the highlights this year are a carnival games room with over a dozen games and prize table, a huge bakers' delight sale (baking, cook books and cooking equipment), an entertainment show from Circus Delights at 1 p.m., an Olympic torch bearer who is giving people a chance to hold the torch and get a photo taken with the torch, a great canteen/café, snow sculpting, kids ball hockey, prizes and more.

"When the Earthquake happened, I asked some of the youth in my group and they decided that we'd give half of our proceeds to Haiti," explained Janes. "We've always support the Kanata Food Cupboard and the great work they do. We hope to bring together the local community, have a great day and make a significant difference in both local and global charities."

Janes noted that there is no fee to attend, but bracelets for the games and show are $5 each or $12 for a family. The snow sculpting is $5 to enter (tools and snow are provided). The hockey is $5 per player or $20 per team with up to seven people.

Visitors can also donate directly and will receive a charitable receipt for donations over $10.

"There is something for everyone at the Winter Carnival and it is all for a great cause," said Janes.

KANATA-HAZELDEAN LIONS CLUB WINTER CARNIVAL

The Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club Winter Carnival daytime events take place at the Lion Dick Brulé Community Centre (170 Castlefrank Rd., south of Hazeldean Road).

The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with pancake breakfast and runs until 11:30 a.m. Breakfast costs $3 per child and $4 per adult.

From 10 a.m. until noon horse-drawn sleigh rides will be taking place in the soccer fields with Little Ray's Reptiles providing entertainment from 1 until 2 p.m. After the reptile show, visitors can take part in an afternoon filled with crafts between 2 and 3 p.m.

Then, for the first time, the Lions are hosting a Kanata Winter Carnival Dance, starting at 8 p.m. At the Mlacak Centre (2500 Campeau Dr.). There will be a cash bar and late night snacks, as well as a Valentine's raffle for a diamond necklace, a 50/50 draw and a silent auction. The ticket price is $10 per person and the proceeds will be donated to the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre's child and youth programs.

Tickets can be purchased by calling Todd Sloan at 613-996-3796 or Naomi Nakamura at 613-836-5857.
