EMC Entertainment - Stittsville painter Bev Ashford won top honours at the Kanata Art Club's 26th annual Juried Art Show and Sale on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Ashford's painting "Northern River" was named Best in the Show at the event, held at the Kanata Civic Art Gallery in the Mlacak Centre.

Ashford said it was gratifying to win the award.

"It's very important," she said. "It gives you something to work towards."

Ashford, an artist with 30 years experience, created her award-winning painting over the course of a month.

"It comes from my imagination," she said. "I love the outdoors. I love northern Ontario. It's just osmosis."

Artists from Kanata, Stittsville, West Carleton, Arnprior and Renfrew competed in the show, with work in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels, mixed media and pencil crayon.

Awards were presented by Josie Braden, president of the Kanata Art Club and Penelope Kokkinos, program art director for the City of Ottawa.

The juror's choice winners were: "Tempest" by Dorothy Hayter, "White Peonies" by Mette Baker and "By the River" by Darina Blazsek.

Blazsek, a Morgan's Grant resident, said this is her first year as a member of the Kanata Art Club.

"I love painting," she said. "It's my hobby.

"I'm just glad I could join and peope could see my paintings."

Diana Pilsworth's painting "Tranquil Tuscany" was given the Official Guest's Award by judge Kokkinos.

Honourable mentions went to "Kick It" by Brenda Beattie, "Melange" by Kate McClure and "Surprise" by Sheila Turner-Whalen.

Jeanette Loh's "Mulvihill Lake II" won the Viewer's Choice Award from the art show in 2011 - the award was chosen by visiting guests of the previous year's event and announced at this year's show.

This year's event was co-ordinated by Carmen Renaud and a team of volunteers.

Members of the public can view the award-winning art at the Kanata Civic Art Gallery, the show runs until Sunday, Jan. 29 and the gallery is open: 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The Kanata Art Club was started in the 1960s and now includes about 80 members, and new artists are always welcome to join.

The club offers instructor-guided classes and workshops throughout the year and has monthly meetings at 1030 Riddell Dr.
