Cyclists will be happy to hear that the bike lanes on Terry Fox Drive will now extend to the Trans Canada Trail, said Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley on Jan. 19.
The bike lanes were set to extend from Fernbank Road to Terry Fox and end at Cope Drive, but Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley said he managed to have the cycling lane extended to the trail.
"We were told it wouldn't be likely done," said the councillor on Jan. 19. "We decided to push, sure enough folks were cooperative."
The extension of the bike lane to the Trans Canada Trail will make it easier on cyclists who bike around the community and the City of Ottawa.
"There's a higher level of risk for the cyclists so we're addressing that," said Hubley. "Cyclists can use that for a quicker commute and a safer commute.
"We're always looking for where we can insert a new bike lane or a pathway to make it easier for people to get around walking or biking."
The councillor said the work is set to start this coming spring, hopefully by May 15.
"It usually depends on the weather," he said. "If we get an early spring and everything's thawed out then we could get an earlier start.
"We want it ready for cyclists to use by sometime this cycling season."
Aside from the bike lane extension, road modifications in the area include adding a traffic light at Terry Fox and Cope, said Hubley.
